Exhibition inauguration (video)

One hundred years after the official birth of the University of Florence, the exhibition "Edocēre medicos. History of medico-surgical training in Florence" tells the story of medico-surgical training in Florence through the centuries.

The exhibition is designed as a journey that begins in 1321 with the founding of the Studium - which contemplated medicine among the subjects of instruction - to the birth of the School of Surgery in Santa Maria Nuova, the founding of the Institute of Higher Studies, and the establishment of the University in 1924.

Exceptional witnesses of this itinerary are the volumes - incunabula, cinquecentine, books and manuscripts - from the heritage of the Biomedical Library, the oldest nucleus of which comes from the Arcispedale di Santa Maria Nuova, and the codices of the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana, which represented the sources of study in the earliest centuries.

The itinerary, in which some rare artifacts from public and private collections are also displayed, is complemented by a touch screen, created by the Museo Galileo, and a browsing machine, which documents the period after 1924-25, through images of the personalities who marked the history of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, up to the years of the 2010 university reform.
