Software tools to help you manage bibliographies

Bibliography management software allows you to import, catalogue, and organize bibliographic citations, or even PDF articles, from online databases and many other sources.

They also allow you to take notes and automatically format citations according to different bibliographic styles.

Among the many existing software programs are Mendeley, Endnote, and Zotero.

Mendeley

logo di MendeleyMendeley is a bibliographic reference management program and an academic, social network. It has an online version and one for download locally to your PC, and they are synchronized.

It is available free of charge.

The special plug-in "Save to Mendeley" allows you to import PDF documents as well as web pages automatically. There are numerous supported sites by Mendeley for importing metadata.

Endnote

To use Endnote Basic:

  • go to http://www.myendnoteweb.com and register upon first use;
  • if you already have a personal account on Web of Science (WoS), you can use those credentials.

Zotero

logo di ZoteroZotero is open-source software for collecting and organizing bibliographic references from web pages and composing bibliographies with various formatting styles. 

It is a Mozilla Firefox browser extension and must be downloaded and installed.
