The second Tuesday of February is celebrated in over 100 countries around the world as Safer Internet Day (SID), the World Day for Internet Safety, established and promoted by the European Commission since 2004.
Over the years, the initiative has become a landmark event for all those working in the sector, institutions and civil society organisations, and its aim is to make people reflect not only on the conscious use of the Internet, but also on the active and responsible role of each individual in making the Internet a positive and safe place.
The Safer Internet Day initiatives include conferences, prize competitions and awareness-raising campaigns focusing on issues related to online child pornography and paedophilia, sexting, loss of privacy and cyberbullying, to which a specific day is dedicated: the National Day Against Bullying and Cyberbullying, which falls on 7 February.
