The Library will present three antique volumes of the Medici-Lorraine Collection that belong to the Sciences Library and are kept at the Galileo Museum since 1980.
These are 3 works dating back to the 17th century, completely digitized and made available in the Digital Library at the Galileo Museum:
- Saggi naturali di esperienze fatte nell’Accademia del Cimento sotto la protezione del serenissimo principe Leopoldo di Toscana … by Lorenzo Magalotti (1666)
- Antignome fisico-matematiche con il nuovo orbe e sistema terrestre by Donato Rossetti (1667)
- Prodromus vniuersae astronomiae by Francesco Levera (1663)
The exhibition, set up to commemorate the fourth centenary of the birth of cardinal Leopoldo de’ Medici, is curated by Valentina Conticelli, Riccardo Gennaioli and Maria Sframeli. It celebrates the refined art collector that was Leopoldo, besides being a passionate scholar of the sciences and humanities. He attended the Accademia della Crusca (the academy for the study and preservation of the Italian language) and he promoted the work of the Accademia del Cimento.
Throughout the years he put together a polyedric collection of rare books (thanks to the counsel of Magliabechi), paintings, drawings, statues, coins, scientific instruments (such as the telescopes the belonged to Galileo, who was a friend of his). All these precious works enriched even further the Medicis' collections.
